New Melodrama Sought

Marigold Days 50th Anniversary Committee is seeking submissions from playwrights, dramatists and scriptwriters for a new melodrama that “commemorates” the beginnings of our Marigold Days festival.  This committee is working with the Mantorville Theater Company (MTC) to produce this play as the last selection of their 2015 Melodrama Season including September 12-13, 2015—the weekend of our 50th Anniversary.

A working or staging draft of your script should be submitted to the committee by October 31, 2014.  Interpret the facts as you wish in your script.  This is a melodrama, not a strict documentation of facts.  Your play should contain all the elements found in traditional melodrama:  1880’s southeastern Minnesota setting, a villain, hero, heroine, mistaken identity, long lost relatives, and good rewarded while evil is punished.   MTC’s summer melodramas typically run about an hour with song and dance olios.  The premise for this production is the founding of the festival or relationship between Mantorville, the humble marigold flower and the festival.  A list of very basic information gleaned from locally authored histories of Mantorville is in the above link.  Run with it!

To further entice you and your muse, the committee is offering a $100.00 first prize along with the guarantee of royalties from eleven stagings of your work by MTC.  Second place will be awarded $50.00 and the possibility of future production by MTC.  Third place and honorable mention will receive $25.00 and also the possibility of future production by MTC.

September 12 & 13, 2015

50th Annual

Marigold Days

It all began with the humble marigold, a hearty and colorful little flower native to the Americas.  Initially begun as a flower show to promote the planting of marigolds throughout the Mantorville community, with the sponsorship of Marigold Dairies, this event has grown to be on one the region's best known and most annual attended festivals.  Marigold Days offers something for everyone.  Antique & Flea market, Flower Show, Quilt Show, Car Show, Melodramas, Music, Dances, a 5K Run, lots of really good food, a Grande Parade, Fireworks and a Baseball Tournament.  Since 1965, 50 years of fun.
